About the Research

A new dietary intervention for adults with bile acid diarrhoea who have persisting diarrhoeal symptoms is being developed in four projects:

Project 1

A systematic review on the effectiveness of diet, psychological, and exercise therapies for the management of bile acid diarrhoea in adults.

This work was peer reviewed and published in April 2022.

Project 2

A cross-sectional study was undertaken as an online survey in May 2021.

434 adults with self-reported bile acid diarrhoea diagnosed via SeHCAT testing from across the UK took part. Exploratory analysis of the dataset was conducted to develop a new dietary intervention, The 8x5 Diet. This work was peer reviewed and published in September 2023.

Project 3

Development of The 8x5 Diet is underpinned by behaviour change techniques and behaviour change theory to optimise adherence the dietary intervention. Focus group meetings involving patients, the public, and healthcare professionals took place in 2022. The training for the design and focus group sessions was kindly funded by BAD UK, the UK’s national charity for people with bile acid diarrhoea.

Project 4

A feasibility randomised controlled trial to test The 8x5 Diet. We are now recruiting participants for the study.
